I dont know if anyone has had this idea before but here it is, is it possible to have a sump/refugium larger then your DT? This could be very applicable with nano tanks that tend to be unstable, you could have a 10g reef with a 30g sump so water parameters would be more stable, less top-off, more room for equipment, and a larger refugium. What are your opinions? I'm thinking of starting a 10g reef in summer and if this idea could work I would probaly have a 20g-30g sump on it.

Having as big of a sump as possible is a good idea and would be perfectly fine. I have had no experience with doing it but if the fuge is the same size or bigger than the tank I think you will need a huge bioload in the DT for the fuge to be effective.

Hmmm...I didnt think of that, I mostly just wanted more water volume but I may keep some cool critters in the fuge like a mantis maybe...

I got a way better idea. I did this to my 20gal and 10gal. Ok so you measure a 20 gal its 24inch. In that other 6inch at the end of the tank you make it into a sump. You will need some glass so you built an sump inside that 20 or 10 and so then you can run it like a built in sump. Its more like a DIY. I can show you guys some pics of what i did. You guys might like it some how and its a pretty nice on not alot of people think about it like this. Sorry if you guys didnt get what i mean.

why not? as long as you have copepods they should be fine; i think maximum would be at least 10 gallons. This could also apply to scooter blennies FYI

If I had the room I would run as big of a sump as possible. I have a 55 gal sump/fuge now but would have gone bigger but it was as big as I could get that would fit.

now im getting really excited about this tank, I may not be able to wait till summer. For stock maybe a mandarin or scooter blenny, a royal gramma, and a BW clown? Could I have a scooter blennie and mandarin together?

I think you can; at my LFS I've seen them together in the same tank.
