So recently I have had 3 Shrimp Die bout 5 Snails and an Urching. Kinda confused on whats happening so figured id post it on here to see what you guys think was the problem. It seems to be clearing up now so looks to me like the problem has ended but still trying to find the cause as this is what baffles me. All my fish are fine healthy eating great. Before I go on ill post the water info as these have not changed all through the problem. Tested about 4 times and the fact that everything looks fine to me kinda has me baffled.

    Salinity 1.026 - Refractometer
    Calcium 440
    Mag 1350
    PH 8.1
    Alk 9
    Phos 0
    Nitrite 0
    Nitrate 0
    Ammonia 0

Now this being said the only thing I have added to the tank as far as equipment is a new JBJ 1/10 chiller due to the fact its gonna start getting hot here soon. As far as dosing have not done anything at all before and through the time I have had this problem.

The tank water was very cloudy Im not sure if this was due to the snails being in there overnite. This very well could be but still seems to be a problem. The water has a very sour smell to it you can smell it as soon as you walk into the room. Kinda bleachy smell but I know there is no chlorine in there due to my ro/di water not having that in it nor has anyone been remotely close to the tank with such a product.

What im wondering is what that smell would come from? Did a healthy water change 30g a few days ago and im gonna do another one today. But the water perams look good so thats what has me baffled by this issue. What could have caused this problem with the tank in the first place. Could it be from a mini cycle? Or maybe something spiked that I did not test with my kits.

I guess what im trying to find out has anyone had this problem before. I Have a UV sterelizer on the tank right now so I know its not bacteria or anything of that nature. What could it be?

Well thanks for listening it seems to be getting clearer now Changed my carbon & GFO yesterday thinking it was time due to the cloudy tank. But who knows this has me stumped. I also have a few softies (Frogspawn, Duncan, Tubstrea, Torch) in there that are looking very stressed from this issue. I dont know what the deal is everything was looking great and healthy and then bam.

What's your salinity and how do you measure it?

Man I have no idea. Inverts are very sensitive to salinity, copper and pH changes, but it doesn't seem like you did anything to affect any of those.
Did you get a new source for your water? Or use a new salt? I'm stumped.
I really don't think a chiller could cause this. Was it used or dirty? How long has it been running?

you mentioned that you just added a chiller. did you happen to rinse it out? or did you just connect it right away and didn't bother to. when i purchased my chiller, i rinsed it out before connecting it for there might be oils and stuff in the reservoir (where the water gets in contact with the cooling probes). just a thought

Chiller was brand new and put it on after the problem was in its cycle. I make all my own water I have 2 55G Plastic drums in the basement one for saltwater one for RO/DI the ro water is reading 0 TDS. The water in the drum matches the water in the tank exactly tested all that as well. As for copper it has never been close to the tank at all never been used in the tank at all. As for salt I changed about 2 months ago to reef crystals from coralife but that has been awhile so dont think thats quite it.

It really has me stumped as well not sure if it was nature taking its course or something I did
