I was wondering if using a external return pump made a big difference in tank temp. What flow rate would I need for a 72 gal? Could you please recomend a brand, I am pretty clueless.

I use a supreme Mag 12 inside my sump. I feel that it is quiter under water and I have not had a whole lot of trouble with heat

I use a little giant external pump nice and quiet just have to oil it every now and then it has been running 3 years 24 hours a day with no problems or overheating.

In my experience, the internal pumps don't raise it too much unless you restrict the flow a lot or it starts to jam from kalk - then it raises it several degrees. I imagine that it really varies pump to pump and brand though. The one time I ran an external pump, it didn't raise the temp at all, but it was a bit louder.

I preferto keep all my pumps out of the water when I can. heat is on factor but so is electricity. I also find that a couple of valves and unions make maintenance easier

One configuration isn't inherantly superior, but there are things to consider. Large, high efficiency pumps (particularly ones with high-head capacity) tend to start their lives as industrial designs, becuase industrial uses favor in-line pumps. Submersibles come from the world of water features (ponds) where heat and leaks aren't big problems. That doesn't make them any less capable of pushing lots of water. Select according to your needs.

If you went external I would recommend a GenX PCX-30

    Hey guys,
I'm new to this forum. I currently have a 100G acrylic tank, built the stand myself, design my own sump and now I need a good, quiet pump. I purchased a Gen-x 2400 subersible pump over a month ago. It is so loud that I can barely here the TV and my living room is not small. My question is what do you guys recommend for a good quiet, reliable pump? is the Pentair Quiet One 3000 model quiet? The quieter the better of course.

    Thanks guys.

    Welcome to 3reef.

People seem to like their Quiet One pumps from the posts I've read. The only negatives I've heard are that they may raise your temp a little bit like most internal pumps. Especially if you restrict the flow a lot. Eheim makes really quiet pumps too - I have one - but they are not cheap.

I go by about 10xvolume now.. so about 700 gph after head loss.

Thanks Matt. I went to a locate fish store this morning and talked to one of the reps there. He recommends a Rio, the one that people use for the uni aquarium. He said it's reliable and quiet. It's for my goldfish aquarium. Have you read any reviews about the Rio's? I used to have a uni aquarium and the pump was pretty quiet. You can't hear it running unless you paid very close attention to it. Unfortunately, I didn't get the name of the pump.
