It might have been only a couple of days. (Foggy memory). It would have definitely been less than 7 days though.

N was a good kid...... he was a genius and got bored very easy! However he was very witty! He got a couple good cracks in on Curt. Looking at him and talking to him you would not expect the tricks that he would play, so he always got you

Wow, Kurt...talk about dedication. Enjoyable stories, but good and bad.

It's sad to hear people can be so careless, stocking tanks without the know-how, not doing the research and not learning from mistakes, but simply getting what they want just because it looks cool and they have the money to pay for it.

    Bite-boy. haha. :D

    Thank you for sharing...any more?

I have tons of stories. LOL

Some months later, there was a customer in who had driven up from Springfield. He had been in the store before when we had the first bat ray. He told me of a bat ray in a fish store housed in a 200 or so. It was never able to swim flat like a batoid should. It had to swim sideways to one end of the tank, aim upwards, then swim back. When it wanted to rest, it had to lean against the LR in the tank. I made a call to a couple of my contacts and told them of the situation. They said that if it was healthy, they would take it. The customer bought it from the store and transported it all the way too me.

If you recall, my contacts said they would take it from me if it was healthy. This thing was pitiful!!! You know how mandarin fish look when they are starving to death? That's how it looked. Not only that, it's entire underbelly looked like someone had taken a belt sander to it. However, I had told that person I would give them store credit for whatever they paid for it. I'll be honest with you. When I checked on him early Sunday morning, I expected him to be dead. To my surprise, he was alive. Unfortunately, this poor thing didn't know that he was supposed to swim hovering the sandbed. Even though he had open space to swim, he circled the tank vertically against the glass just like he was still in that tiny tank in the other fish store.

The marine biologist came out and we had to give him antibiotics to stop secondary infections from all of the scratches. No matter what I did to disguise the flavor, if there were antibiotics in his food, he would spit it out. ::BIG SIGH::. The next step is obvious. I had to give him shots. After the first time I gave him a shot, he wasn't going to go there again. For the next several weeks, my morning routine before opening the store was to get into my "altogether" and chase a bat ray with a shot in one hand (and other sharks in the tank). That was fun....NOT!!! There was no shower at the store so I felt disgusting all day long.

It took a couple of months but he got healthy, fat, and grew quite a bit. He is now on exhibit at a public aquarium.

    its a fantastic story Curtis
although the idea of swimming in a tank with predators, does make me cringe a bit when I read it

where do you stick a hyperdermic needle into a Ray?
is or was there a best location for that?
