Nope, some people use it because they think it helps with corals, which is true..Alot of people dose it. It can help with xenia growth and other types of corals growth a slight amount..But its not a need to do thing. If your not a experienced doser i wouldn't do it that much or at all..Because if you accidentally do to much then it could be bad.

I had dipped some of my corals using the lugols iodine solution method and although it cleared up any signs of infection, it worked quite quickly at killing off any inverts.
I'm not sure if your iodine is the same thing, but watching that has made me a little scared of adding too much iodine to my tank.
I'm sure a certain amount is required, but I'd rather let water changes take care of it.
If dosing tho, I would definitely want to have an accurate test for it (hanna make a checker dont they?) and add it very slowly.

You shouldn't dose anything you can't test for. And Iodine is IMO one of those that testing for is a waste of money because the levels are kept where they should be with regular w/c.

I do use it to treat and dip corals in a small container. I use Tincture of iodine at a ratio of 15 drops per liter of tank water.

Iodine is probably the most misused supplement there is in the reef hobby. All the iodine necessary is in a good salt mix and it does not get depelted as much as other elements.

Its super easy to get a reef tank out of whack and a real pain to get it back in balance. Toss the supplements and additives and stick with a good salt mix and regular water changes with regular testing. IF and only IF regular testing with good quality test kits like Salifert of Elos shows there is a demand for something and it is depleted, then and only then develop a dosing plan. If you cannot and do not test for it, do not put it in your tank period.

+1 definitely easy to get a tank out of whack and tough to get a tank it back in shape.

Iodine is discussed in this article:

It really isn't necessary and is more likely to become problematic than beneficial IMO.
