    planning to get a coupple of corals from local reefers over the weekend got a question about coral dip

    for a coral dip could i use reqular Iodine from the drug store

    I did a little googling because I was curious. Some people do say you can use drugstore iodine as a dip. You have to check a couple things first, check the ingredients list and make sure there is nothing potentially harmful/toxic on the list, and secondly check the iodine concentration, most drugstore iodine is much less potent than the coral dips. I think drugstore is more like 2-4% iodine and coral dips are more like 10-15%.

    I'm no chemist and I claim no responsibility if your corals shrivel up and die because of this info. :)
    I would just get some seachem reef dip or lugol's or something just to be safe, that's just me though. ;D

    I dip all my new corals in an iodine bath like Tropic Marin Pro Coral Cure before introducing them into my tank. I get a bit paranoid about introducing things like flatworms into my display tanks. I also believe that dipping a new coral in an iodine solution helps it recover from the stress of transport and reduces the chance of microbial/bacterial infection on the new coral.
