I have been watching and waiting fr someone to mention the leeched chlorophylls from the plants and as for any PO4 that could leech from the carbon the plants will consume and leech out chlorophylls and cause the greenish yellow look . It's the DOC'S dissolved organic carbon's that are what is adsorbed by the carbon And also to remove the little amount of any PO4 just soak it in ro water for few hrs before using it. Good carbon has little PO4 in it. not as much in a few cups as a cube of frozen meat food

just don't use the reelly cheap stuff.i use cheatto and a skimmer to filter my tank but i found a small amount,no more than a cup of carbon for a 55 gallon tank .is needed to keep the water from smelling and getting a slight tint to it.i change it every time i get a chance.

I run carbon is one of these Red Sea Merlin Fluidized Filter and it works great. It allows water to enter at the bottom and exit at the top so it passes through the carbon well.
