is a filter sock necessary on my overflow line coming into my sump. i am currently running one but it makes the water foam up which in turn runs the sock over and the water splashes everywhere. is it okay to add on to the pipe and run it down into the water? The tank is brand new and the water is crystal clear and the sock is clean. It apparently can't keep up with the overflow. So i was thinking if it wasn't necessary i could run the pipe on down into the sump water and have no splashing. i just wouldn't have any mechanical filtration. just let me know some ideas on this so i can make adjustments before i leave town tomorrow. i don't need any mishaps while i am gone.

Mechanical filtration is not necessary. You may be able to run the pipe down in but bubbles from your overflow may be even worse.

You couldn't give me a filter sock. I don't want anything that traps pods and detritus and leads to maintenance.

Hey scooter how high do you run the bubble level in that skimmer. I ask because I recently bought the same one

If you can do it without having a ton of microbubbles then go for it. They aren't necessary. I have gone with and without. I like mine better with now. It seems to keep my tank cleaner and definitely quieter. Even when i ran my overlows under water with bends and everything, it was still loud and caused bubbles

Rick i just plugged the skimmer in for the first time Wednesday night so i'm still in the break in stage. with that being said i have the pump valve at 2:00 or a 45 degree angle. The red knob is just barely open. For the price i give for it i'm sure gonna give it a try. Also, this morning i added a ten inch piece of pipe to run down through the sock down into the water. that seemed to stop the foaming up and all the bubbles that were caused without the sock. Check out my update on my 55 gallon inwall thread and you can see the overflow and the whole setup.

I don't use one. The only mechanical filtration in my setup is a big ball of chaeto teaming with pods and bristleworms to eat anything that ends up there.

just got back home and no accidents, microbubbles, or overflowed skimmer. i think i will leave the pipe extended to the bottom of the sock. the water hasn't foamed up this way. plus the water going into the sump is silent this way. maybe once every 15 minutes my overflow catches a little air and makes the gurgle sound, but other than that so far so good.
