Is a skimmer an absolute must?

    Id recommend getting and Aqua C Remora with a maxijet 1200.. Awsome skimmer for the price! Im sorry if i came off a bit rude... no intention...
    Also i dont recall this bit of information given while reading, but no water changes during the cycle either!

    cheap skimmer is coral life skimmer I bought mine for less then 200 new. good luck

    No problem! I use an AquaC, there is literally no adjustments, except for cup height. Literally a "plug in play" device. The other skimmer I was banking on was an Octopus.

    i have had a 55 setup for a while now with no protien skimmer what so ever and its fine however it is still good to have one so no its not a must but i would ATLEAST buy a decent one like im doing today

    I believe with the fish you have or want, a skimmer is very important. The larger, predator type fish produce more waste and they are messy eaters. The trigger will get to be about 12" in length, a very big fish for a 55, especially considering that a standard 55 is only 13" wide. You may want to reconsider or as it grows try to upgrade or trade it in.
