Most people that have real ocean sand in there tank, it is normally from Florida or the Carribean. I am going to Virginia Beach soon and I was going to bring some sand back to add to my tank. I was wondering if sand that is that far north would it make a difference?

Beach sand will likely be highly contaminated due to Eutrophication and other causes. I would not add sand unless it was collected far offshore. Also, Virgina beach isn't exactly tropical, so not all of the organisms will do well in a tropical tank.

Its sand. I wouldnt worry about it. Thats just my opinion. People have used everything from play sand to fine grade sand for aquariums. The difference? None. Some people dont even have a substrate and their tanks thrive. Wash it thoroughly and throw it in. Makes no difference in my opinion. I have a 1.5 inch sand bed in my tank. I was told I would have issues but I dont. Just fyi.

i personally wouldn't use sand from a beach, the pollution would really worry me. and how would you wash it? cant use detergents of any kind. every try to get oil of of sand? Ask Louisiana how simple that is. sorry for the sarcasm but its just how i see things. i would never willingly add an unknown variable to my aquarium if it was 100% avoidable.

No, all sand is not equal. Beach sand may be contaminated so use at your own risk. Purchased sand can be different sizes and colors, choose what's appropriate for your tank occupants and your desires.
