    So if I build my fuge / sump 30L x 14T x 13W...would that be better than say 24L x 14T x 13W. ..Highest partition at about 10 inches...
So 30Lx4Tx13W..I'm thinking it gives me plenty of room for the dreaded power outage, and with a 55 gal tank, using ottys formula...I should have about 6 gallons reserve....exceeding the recomended 10% of total tank volume....if someone can recalculate and correct me if I'm wrong please feel free...I'd like to do this just once.:p
    Thanx in advance,
    LG

I myself would never combine a fuge and sump into one unit . As for reserve for power outages in a 55 all you would have depending on overflow design and type is 5 gallons and with a sump 24x14x13 thats near to 30 gallons its self and at 5 inches of operating depth I'd say you would have plenty room for drainage black flow . I do not have a calculator near by to do the true gallonage but 30 is close.

Well..actually it will have dividers (3) like all the other examples I have been looking at on this forum and elsewhere.....so I guess I can make the tallest dividing partitions 12 inches, and still be ok.
Thanx for your highly regarded opinionated response. ; )
    have a nice morning..

the difference of the area works out to be about 4.7 gallons for the fuge or 2 gallons for the sump. the added space should probably be used for the sump area. if your persistant on keeping the sump/fuge as one, having the two separate within the same area would work with a little imagination. plumb the fuge to have minimal flow with the rest of the flow going to the sump area. this can be done by the drain splitting from the main tank. then have the fuge naturally drain into the sump area.

id be more worried about a power outage than the recommended volume of the fuge. general rule of thumb for the fuge is 10%, but its not etched in stone. nothing wrong with a 1000 gallons behind a 10 gallon tank with any size fuge. more water the better.

Right on...I'll be using an APC UPS for power outage redundancy...but I'd like to have all bases covered.
3 chambered unit, 1=fuge with the split tee with flow control valve coming off return pump...2=sump, that the fuge spills into through the overflow patitions and the tank water comes into for heater and skimmer and such? (maybe not in there I'm still try'n to figure that placement out)then it flows over into the pump return area 3= return area for my pump...kind of like the one pcdillon did..(I think that was his handle)..just bigger.
Still working it all out...any suggestion are welcome of course.

    My final size is 30L X 16H X 13W.... Divided in 3rds...my tallest partion being 11 inches
So my "extra " emergency area would be 30X5X13
    I hope that sounds resonable.
    Thanx again,
    LG
