I got some fresh seaweed from my brother who flew in from Boston yesterday. It came from the box in which he shipped live lobsters in. Can I make use of that seaweed at all? I hate to see it go to waste if it has any nitrate lowering characteristics in it at all. Much like the chaeto and such. Could anyone shine some light on this for me before I discard it?

no because i think that kind of seaweed needs to put roots down and unless u "plant them" and they start growing and surviving u'll just have dead plants float int he tank.

just imo, i'm not completely sure.

I was kinda thinking along the same line. I know some form of seaweed just drifts while others grow upwards of 100 meters anchoring from the sea floor. Perhaps these are the type that were anchored and just got clipped for shipping purposes. Thanks for your input.

Try feeding it to the tangs and foxface

Aside from maybe not knowing it's exact care requirements it may end up being a nasty nuisance if it does grow and take off. Unless you really understand what it is I wouldn't put it in the tank.

That's a good suggestion! I may just dice it up and see if the tangs take it. I can always freeze some and use it as a source of food. Let me try that tonight.
