i'm trying to get my return line plumbed with a ball valve to restrict its flow a little and had a hard time finding parts at various hardware stores to accomplish this. the best i found was a pvc ball valve and 2 galvanized steel screw in adapters that will tie in the valve to my 5/8" line.

is it ok to use the galvanized steel adapters, or am i going to have to go to another store a half hour away?

    new smyrna beach area.

gah, i figured they were a no go, i'll just go return everything and torture another guy in a far off plumbing section till i get what i want. maybe i'll just use actual pvc instead of my 5/8" hose and get this thing plummed proper. can anyone point me in the direction of a good how-to thread on plumbing for newbs?

    thanks!

you can try using glues fittings, and that way you can use bushings to bush down to 5/8 if you have too. I found it best to skip the hardware store and go to a plumbing supply or even pool supple store. the hardware stores around here don't have much PVC.

Then you aren't going to the right hardware store. ;)

I work at a local hardware store in Orlando and we have just about everything you could ever want in PVC. In fact the pool supply stores often come to us for PVC parts.

As stated galvanized is no good! The galvanized coating has been known to peel off, and you don't want that floating around with your fish. Also it won't stand up worth a darn in salt water.

They should have gray plastic hose barbs at least.

If you came to my store I could set you up with gray plastic or nylon hose barbs whichever you wanted. But its kind of a far drive. ;D

Yep, any local Home Depot or Lowes will have all PVC valves. If I can find them out here, anyone can ;)
The only thing I would suggest, that if it is the main return, to get a true gate valve and not a ball vale. Gate valves are MUCH more accurate with their adjustments. Now, all PVC gate valves will be tough to find. Home improvement stores will not have them. If you have a good pool/spa company, they might. I ordered mine from Marine Depot.

i went to the better home depot in daytona and they had everything i needed in pvc. the only metal on my setup is the circle clamps that i got as a $5 insurance policy against leaks at any of the joints.

thanks yet again for all the help!
