Hi I have a 75Gal tank I Have 2 Penguin 1140 power heads and one return pump from my sump the total amount of water movement is around 1200 gph including the power heads and the Rio 3100

What you think is it enough?

    Sorry Szogun,
What are you planning to keep.
IMO If softies and LPS I would say just enough maybe 1 more PH to ensure there is water flow every where
If SPS I would add 3 to 4 more PH

Thanks I have no problem with adding more
I just don't want to have a cyclone in my tank :)

Td. Great link. But I'm a little lost as to the relationship between tank turn over and the flow requirements for specific corals.
It is IMO still possible to have great tank turnover but have pure flow in your aquarium.
For example. I have a 75G tank. I have a return pump that is rated at 1800GPH Lets say a MAG 18 I use a Stream 6060 rated at 1600
to achieve 99.99% purity my tank would turn over every 0.202 hours so if I have extrapolated correctly my tank would turn over 12 times in an hour.
But I placed my Stream in the front corner of the tank facing the over flow. my return is pointed across the back of the tank. The large piece of LR have an Arco that has no flow.

    See what I mean.

I'm just being devils advocate here. I'm sure this formula is similar to Watts per gallon more a rule of thumb that a rule.

I like the formula though. I'm going to run it on my REAL tank tonight.

hummmm, very true Jason and thank you for pointing that out

with what you said, i dont see how that acro wouldnt have any flow, in a sense you are creating a tornado affect (if i understand you correctly), i do see what you are saying

i have a naso tang, as most people know they like a lot of LR, but i didnt think about the flow, they also like flow, i have a mag 8 that i use for water changes, i put it in front left corner (so i could get to it easily) not thinking about the rio in the right corner (im waiting on it to die), this caused both pumps to fight each other, but it worked out for the best, my acros have a lot of flow and my crocea clam doesnt have that much flow (which they like), so i do see what you are saying

so from this, i think we can add placement of pumps/pwr heads to the list, to increase the water movement Y/N maybe ?

Agreed then. It's a great equation but the factor of pwr head placement is equally as important to accommodate all the varying flow needs of your tank inhabitants

SPS coral or Small Polyped Stony Coral
That is just one of 100s of thousands.
That photo is from Ocean Aquatics.  A coral Farm here is Vancouver BC.
