I have a yellow tang with a light red blotch on its dorsal fin. I also have a Foxface that has a tinge of red all the way around its body on the ends of its fins. I was told that it was a bacterial infection and was sold a pak of Kanamycin caps. He said to open the cap and disolove in their food and feed the whole tank with it. And to use all 10 capsules.

Do you guys see any problem with my using it in my main tank along with the corals and everything else?

From what I know Kanamycin targets specific bacteria and is not a general antibiotic. Without knowing what you ar fighting against it would be very difficult for anyone to specify which treatment to use. However that might not be such a bad thing as at least you know you are not completely wiping out all the bacteria using Kanamycin as a teatment.

IMO, I would use it and observe the results, and if not sucessful try another treatment.

John, do you think it will hurt my corals? I had also posted the question on RC and one guy just about had a fit that a LFS would tell me to put an antibiotic in a reef tank. He said I'm looking at 100% disaster and that it should only be done in a QT tank.

I've already dosed the tank twice, last night and tonight. I know you've told me not to believe everything that I hear but I do value your opinion.

So you would put it in your reef tank?

    Cindy,

I share your pain, so many people will give opinions without thought, they simply repeat, often with passion, what they have read and tell you it's 100% fact :)

I can't see how the proper dosage of an antibiotic could harm the corals and yes, if I was in your situation I would dose without hesitation and then observe the results.

Big Mistake!!!! You may kill your biofilter and have to cycle your tank all over again. Use antibiotics in a quarantine tank.

    May?

If you use anitibiotics in a quarantine tank and the same thing happens you kill the fish anyway, right?
