Is it really necessary to use RO/DI water to dose powder supplements?

Can't you pre-mix the additives in a container like the BRS products? I just pump out the alk or Ca and pour it into the overflow. Very easy.

I guess I could do that in milk jugs and then figure out the amount of liquid to dose to equal 3 tsp of dry powder?

Do I really need to do all this though?

I would. It's really not that hard to do. It's about 10 minutes of mixing time every month and a half or so for me. Also, I don't want concentrated amounts of additives getting into the chaeto or into the skimmer or return pump.

what many of my SPS friend's do is pre-mix it in x seperate SW holding tank, and then add when it's time for a top off- tried this on my 45 gallon, didnt work to well due to such a small tank but for larger tanks w/ good flow- this method- it works well. ya just have to add slowly or you shock the tank- all be it, most corals return with a vengence- from what I have seen.
