Is it still needed, if so why

You'll get a wide variety of opinions on that, but technically, the short answer is no. Water changes are done either to import elements or export nutrients. If everything is staying in balance, you're just wasting time and money. There are plenty of 3Reef members that rarely (and some, never) do water changes.

i do a 10 gallong WC when my 5 gallon ATO bucket gets empty. but thast just cus i hear bad things happining to RODI units when they only make small ammounts of water. so each time i run the RODI unit, i make 15 gallons, 5 for the ATO, 10 for the tank:) prams stay teh same both before and after WC, so idk if its "required" or not. good question tho:)

You will get a LOT of different opinions on this subject. Definitely what works for one may not work for another. There are so many variables. Like: my tank is a 26g with a 3.3G fuge with cheato. I don't use carbon of an kind, no GFO, no bio pellets. No filtration media other then the LR. I do exactly 5g WC every 4th week. My tank is amazing :)

I have been thinking about setting up a system (relatively cheaply) so that I can do automatic daily water changes on my tank. I feel smaller, more frequent changes are much better than less often/ more drastic changes within a reef tank.

I'm lazy when it comes to testing and doing water changes. I test every few weeks, when I get around to doing it. I am sure if I had some cool fish or expensive coral in there, I'd be more uptight about it. But my nitrates stay around 3-5ppm usually, so I'm lazy.

So, back to the question...do water changes need to be done on schedule like a ritual? No. lol...but I still plan to setup my auto-water changes. Maybe I'll just make it so I can flip a switch to do it, rather than automatically happening every day.
