Hi guys! Next week I'm going to take a trip to a place down here in mexico where it is legal to harvest live rock. It is roughly a 3 hour drive from home. My question is: will the introduction of freshly harvested live rock affect or recycle my tank? Do we consider live rock from the ocean cured or uncured? Thanks!

There will be some die off, but if you can keep it wet that will be minimal.

Is your tank established or is this a new set up?

If it is new you can still expect a algae bloom

Thanks for the info Jason! I do have an interesting setup in my SUV, where I have a container in which I can bring back the rock completely submerged as well as oxygenated and temperature controlled. This rock is intended for a new tank setup which in fact is in the middle of it's cycling process. This is why I wouldn't like to start cycling back again...

Cool you should have little problems with that set up. you may want to check the rock carefully for critters you don't want like crabs and mantis shrimp. So are you diving for the rock?

Yeah, I know a place with lots of 2-3 pound debris which has already fallen off the reef. It's about 3 meters down so I prefer just snorkeling it out. I will definitely check the rock for unwanted critters. The rock from this place is quite interesting. Next week I will post some picks for you guys to see. Thanks again for your insight.
