    Yeah that looks like some kind of branch rock.
    Honestly, you should be alright. It's not ideal, but it should be ok.
    A lot of deal with live rock is surface area for bacteria,etc. The more porous the more surface area.

    Other mistakes people make is just buying rock that looks pretty, even if it's dense and is like a bowling ball.

    Mine is both dense and pourus. Very nice stuff!

    Also when buying corals I prefer to get them on a rock that is covered in coraline algae this way helping your seeding coraline algae through out the tank.

    My LFS has this one tank he puts LR in that takes no time to be covered in coraline algae which it the tank I try and buy from.
