    Hello everyone,

I'm wondering if its safe to have a small part of your tank hang off the back of a stand? I have a 40 gallon breeder and about 1.5inches of the back of the tank hangs off the edge of the stand. I'm wondering if it's safe to do this? I assume this stand was made for this size tank, or am I mistaken?

It doesn't sound like the stand was made for that size tank to me..??
    I wouldn't want 1.5inches overhang.. No overhang..

Here's that I would do, to use that stand..
Cut 2 pieces of 3/4 Plywood.. The same size as the bottom of your tank..
    Could be bigger, not smaller..
If you had the grain running one way on 1 piece and the other way on the other piece would be better, but wouldn't have to..
I would put water proof wood glue between the plywood, sit the tank on it and fill with water, etc.. But you could get by with out that..

IMHO I think a Tank needs to be supported 100%..
You could sleep better at night.. !!!

    Good Luck, Larry

No, not safe. The entire trim line of the tank must be supported.

Thanks guys. I read this too late. Already bought a 46 gallon bowfront with matching stand. Now I can sleep easy.

I have 3" of my tank hanging off either side. I don't have a tank stand for the stand, and I don't intend on investing money in this tank when I want to upgrade.

Would I suggest someone else do it? NO

Am I willing to take the risk? YES

Do I really think it's a risk? NO

    Am I worried? NO

Glass shares the same principles as concrete where it takes force and it becomes stronger till it collapses in on itself. There's not enough force on those 3" to make it break.

And also, the trump card. There's a lip of plastic all around my tank. The glass doesn't sit on anything, which means the entire bottom of the tank is floating and is withstanding the weight.

When is the last time you saw a .... Tank that collapses in on itself.??

And I wouldn't worry about the glass " breaking " But about it loseing its seal..
There's alot of things we " can get by with ".. Alot has to do with what size tank you have, how much money you have in it, coral, fish, etc..
Even supported 100% a tank can blow a seal and come apart..
Working with liquids and solids are very different..

Sorry, but about everything you stated there is very very wrong. The problem is not that the glass will break. What will happen is the seams will open up. Without that bottom trim fully supported, the weight of the water is now attempting to pull each pane apart at the seams. How long it would take, I couldn't answer that. But left like that long enough, it will happen.
