Agreed, spend 10 bucks at any local depot or lowes and fix the problem. A broken tank for stupidity will make you get out of reefing all together.

Just so OP has enough info... this ^ is bad advise and not correct. rewris, it's not a risk, it's inevitable. the only 'risk' part of it is how long it will take before it fails... but it will fail.

I wouldn't have done this to begin with... but if I were in this position and was going to upgrade within a few weeks... I might bet against father time... but if the upgrade is more than a month out... well, have some silicone on hand.

I'm pretty convinced having any part of the tank overhanging is bad news. Not willing to take the risk at all. I think I might just convert my old 40 gallon into a terrarium or something, or possibly sell the stand and use the tank as a sump.

atleast split the difference, or put a sheet of plywood cut to size underneath

If it ist big enuff go buy some timber and build one that is big enuff....I built mine in a couple hours from some nice cherry wood....the bottom of the stand is 1 1/2 inch thick cherry the rest is half inch except the shelf and it is 1/4.....even the doors are 1/2 inch....I wanted mahogany but I am using it for my bedroom stuff....

Splitting the difference would be even worse. Then the weight the tank rim is designed to support is only supported by two of the shorter sides of the rim.

Glad to hear your not going to try it this has disaster written all over it.
