i'm setting up my 55 gal today with a shallow sandbed. I just purchased 20lbs live and 40 of un-live aragonite sand, should i rinse the not live stuff, and do i need to rinse in saltwater...in fact how do i go about rinsing sand in the first place...and thanks to all on this site who have helped me, i just spent $320 on sand, live and base rock, salt, test kits, and chlorine remover....if not for you guys the lfs would have had me spendin over $600 and i really caught him off guard refusing to buy all live sand and rock(bought some of both, just not all) and the idea of cutting boards in bottom under shallow sand bed....thanks everyone you're f-ing awesome

    Hi Brian

I think you know this already but just in case - dont rinse the live sand
but for the non live sand - a rinse in RO DI water is all I do - no need salt water to rinse

my method was to put the sand in a 2 gallon bucket , a small amount at the time, gently pour or run RODI into the bucket, swirl about with hand and pour off gently

I am in complete agreement with Steve. Wash it good. Get all the gunk out. Otherwise, a cycle will ensue. I have placed non-washed sand in my tank and it did not work out well at all. The live sand, of course, does not need to be rinsed.
