Is Sump / Fuge / Skimmer Good Enough ?

    OK,
So this is my first Sump / Fuge setup.
So far I am happy with the Bio Filter and the parameters of the water but I must say that I am not happy with the water clarity.

I just tried adding cheese cloth to the egg crate just before the return pump section and the water immediately dropped. But for the few minutes I had it in place, it already began collecting stuff.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can add some mechanical filtration to this setup ?

I am thinking of adding an external canister just to collect the debris.

I've bee using a filter sock where the tank water flows into my sump for a few months and it is working great for removing all that floating debris. The important thing to remember with any type of mechanical filtration is clean it out often. How often will depend on how much gunk it's collecting but I do mine about once a week, give or take a few days. I see you have a sponge filter on the right side of your sump, I assume that is your return side to the tank, that should do some of the filtering for you but a filter sock can't hurt.

I thought of the filter sock or micron bag on the intake, but many say this robs the sump/fuge of the nutrients it needs to grow. Have you found this to be the case ?

Yes, The right side is the Mag 9 with the factory sponge, The Mag 7 for the Skimmer has the Sponge, I also have a sponge on the skimmer output.

Problem is that these are all large sponge. So they catch the large debris but doesn't help for water clarity . More like dusty water I guess. Really really fine debris.

I have tried a couple forms of fine filter on the exite baffle but it always messes with he flow.

    Thanks

The tank should settle with time. I run two filter socks on my sump inlets but have my T for the fuge before the socks so everything gets to the fuge.

Thanks Otty. Whats "Within Time " My migration from the older tank to this one was completed in 10-17-08 so thats sneeking up on 3 months. With an additional 5 weeks of just water and sump with sand running.

I originally had the T to the Fuge but could not get any flow so I abandoned the T design.

How about running a sock on the Intake one week a month just to help clear things up ?

    Cheers

So far the water stayed at the same level in the sump.

So why is that ? I add something on the return side and the water level changes, I add to the intake and nothing changes ?

    Cheers

Place a rectangular sponge inbetween the two baffles before the return pump(last pic you posted). Only negative aspect is that the sponge will be another thing to clean out. Luna

How about just adding a HOB mechanical filter on the sump or on your tank.

Thats what i did and it works great

I am new at this so I am learning here as well but would'nt you want things in the fuge to end up in the display tank? So putting a fillter after the fuge is a bad idea right? I have a filter sock coming from my display and I just feed the fuge some crushed flake food every once in a while. When I feed the fuge life comes out of everywhere what do you guys think about this??
