Good day all, I set up a 10 gallon sump this last weekend with a 500 GPH return. I dont have a cover or anything on the return side of the sump, and it is Loud as hell! It is a steady drone, and the noise stays the same all the time, but when we shut off the TV it is noticible to me at least. Is there any way to make this a little quiet? Does any one have any experience in this area? Would putting some kind of cover on this along with a towel, dampen some of the noise? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

If its the RP thats making a vibrating noise, you can always place a mat under the pump. If its the pvc tube, anchor it to the stand.

not at all, it is wide open, there are no kinks anywhere and it is performing perfectly. I bought the pump from Lowes and it was being sold as a pond pump 300-500 GPH. I think that it is just a noisy operator.

Watch using pond pumps on marine systems as most have brass and copper fitting for bearings and will run havoc on your livestock.

I think you just answered your own question.
It could be that since its made for ponds, noise doesnt matter b/c its usually outside. Try getting a aquarium pump thats made with noise in mind.

that sucks since i just dropped 45 on that, oh well. I will buy a Rio that can handle 500 GPH when i get christmas money. ;) hopefully that will be alot quieter. I will sell what i have on Ebay and get back my money.

Are you positive its not vibrating against the sides or bottom of your sump? Might be worth checking out by moving it a little to see if that helps the noise any. If it does, just split some clear tubing into bumpers for wherever the pump is touching glass.
