Is there such a thing as too much skimmer?

I have a EV-120 on my 90g reef. You should be able to read my sig below. Thought about maybe going to a EV-180. What are the problems with skimming too aggressively.

I will be putting in a 60g sump/fuge too. With a bigger skimmer I should never have to worry about too much fish load. (within reason, a 90g reef on the high end of stocking levels)

Right now I don't have any more plans of putting in more fish. Maybe a Grama. 3 of my fish will get bigger, and I want to concentrate on more coral now.

You get to a point where you just don't need it. IMO your skimmer is fine. I have 13 fish in my 90 with great water quality and I'm running a superskimmer (Given 6 are gobies that together have about 1 tang's impact on the bioload and 5 more are 2 clownfish, a royal gramma, a six line, and an algae blenny.). Point being, especially if you have fish with minimal impact like mine you don't need anything more.

On another note, I would recommend getting a RG. Great colorful fish with a FANTASTIC personality.

For a 90g, I would run at least a 180. I have a 90g myself. I run an old style ETSS 600XR. It is rated from 100 to 300 gallons. What that means is 300 gallons lightly stocked and 100 gallons heavily stocked. I consider mine, while adequate, borderline. We tend to stock our tanks to capacity and that should be taken into account when looking at skimmers.

If you are looking at the EV series and want to do it right IMO, I would look at the EV-240 with a Mag-18 driving it. You might be able to get away with a Mag-12, but you could always dial the 18 down a bit with a ball valve. That would cover you big time. You would even have room to upgrade with that set up.

No such thing! A skimmer will continue to work at reducing contaminants, particulate matter and other elements from the water. If you have very little nutrients in your water it just means that the sludge and nasty froth will not be as visible but it is piece of mind and working for you and your livestock all the time.
The only thing it will remove are trace elements in the salt and that you add to your water!

I wouldn't put a 1000 gallon skimmer on it but I also don't believe there is such thing as over skimming. Let the skim begin!! ;)

Thanks for all the input guys. I like the EV series just because of foot print. I'm putting my fuge together now. On thing is that my 90g can only overflow so much. My plumbing is rather restricted. I'm in the process of redoing all my plumbing to get the max out of my 9.5.

Right now my mag7 is matched to what my 9.5 is doing. Improving plumbing will give me flow for the fuge. However, at some point, I would have to upgrade my return pump if I was going to upgrade my skimmer. I'm not sure what the cut off is for how much my overflow can move.

I have thought about moving my 9.5 to a skimmer, and using a 12 for my return. It all comes down to overflow. Right now I have barb bulkheads. Going to the larger threaded and oversized plumbing with split returns at the tank. We will see what that does for me.

Thanks for all the input. Add more if you have any.
