Algae problems are usually caused by aquarium water with excess nutrients like phosphate, nitrates etc. You can try adn siphon out what you can to remove the algae in the short term. In the long term you may have to examine how you care for your tank. There are some commercial dry foods also contain excess nutrients and other undesirable things like nitrates, phosphates etc so I strain/rinse my fresh/frozen foods before feeding my tank. You may want to consider feeding your fish less often. Also using RO/DI water and a high quality salt with no NO3, phosphates etc like Tropic Marin will really help too. Adding a phosphate remover and increasing flow in your tank way help too

He wanted you to kill off your tank then. I wouldn't take advice from the guy.

    Bleach is a BAD idea!

All the other advise is great though, water changes are the biggest one. Be careful not to over feed and manual removal will help a lot also.

Now the real question here is "will the algae, such as hair algae dissapear all together off the rocks aand glass EVENTUALLY, or are people better off starting with new rock??" I think this is what the original poster was getting at.

Best way to get rid of red slime is siphon them out as much as you can. Increase the flow in your tank, reduce feeding, reduce phosphate level in your tank, do more frequent water changes, reduce lighting period if possible turn off light for 1 week.
Alternative solution would be using Red Slime removal medication.

Long term, this is your best rout. For now, as stated before, remove the res slime algae that currently occupies your tank. When I had this problem I got Kent Nitrate Sponge & Kent Phosphate Sponge from Drs Foster & Smith. This helped a great deal to keep down on the algae once I had removed most of it. Just be sure not to leave it in for too long, as this will release those bad nutrients back into the water.;)

It's inexpensive and is enough to last you a long time.
