So i have been looking for an overflow system for my 40 gallon display tank and 20 sump. Found this and hes asking $20 for each. The overflow is apparently a DIY that he got on ebay and says the tubing starts the siphon then you just put it underwater inside the overflow box to keep siphon break from happening. I dont understand how that works....

But also, the mag 7 pump hes offering for $20. Is this a good pump for my needs? From what ive read it sounds good.

Thanks!!! I need quick responses to tell him if im interested in buying or not.

The price on the pump is great, but being an owner of a WEIR style overflow, I must say I would ALWAYS go with a U-tube overflow rather than the WEIR. This type of overflow that you're looking at tend to accumulate enough air to break siphon (it has happened to me 8 times in 15 months and it is not nice)

Get something like the eshopps u-tube overflow box. I will never go back to the WEIR as a primary overflow. I now have it as a "backup" in case something happens to my eshopps... but to be honest, I never had to do anything to it.

In short; I'm very happy with my eshopps u-tube overflow and very un-happy with my WEIR style overflow... regardless of whether they come with an aqualifter pump (falsely said to guarantee never to break siphon) or not, why use an extra pump when a simple proven design does a superior job ?

Great advice. Thanks very much. I am purchasing the pump but likely passing on this overflow. I will try to find a deal on a Eshopps.

And I'm not promoting eshopps either, btw. That just happens to be the brand I found cheaper at that time, but like I said, The design is very simple and proven to work... no joke... so regardless of brand, the U-tube design is the winner in my book.

Another thing about the WEIR overflows is that if they get dirty in the interior walls, it is hard to get "all of it" out and the nipple the air hose hooks up to tends to clog easily too.

    Just my experience :)

So now hes sent pictures of what seems to be a different overflow box. Take a look and let me know what ya think!

Is this a normal Eshopps over flow box or has it been DIY'ed and altered (except for the silenced he made out of PVC)?

Looks just like my eShopps overflow, so I'd say it's not been altered.

Yeah the first overflow box is definitely a different one then the picture you just posted. Since it is a u-tube style one go for it. I had that before I got a drilled tank and it was fine.

    K. Everything just looks a little crooked and stuff in the pictures. Ive never seen one of these in person so I dont know if you can remove the tubing and other items to adjust things. I mean if this is a standard Eshopps overflow, I need one.. and $20 seams like a steal compared to new.

Also if you notice, this Eshopps one looks quite larger if you look at the size relative to his hand holding it. I am thinking possibly too large for my tank. From what ive researched it looks most similar to the Eshopps PF-800 which is 800 gph, that gonna be too much for my 40 gallon display i think. I emailed him asking the model number.
