please read my DIY reef thread on my signature line.

If you want, you can buy a drill bit and drill your existing tank for under 20 dollars and make your own fool proof overflow on the cheap.

Man, what's with all the hostility. I think for a prebuilt one it's a good deal. Just check these out: Eshopps Refugium Filters | Pet Solutions Of course if you go the DIY route, you can make it for a lot cheaper. It all depends on what you want.

Wow, what's your issue man? Horkn is a nice guy that has helped quite a few people on here. By the way, if you read through his build thread, you can see that he put lots of effort and time into his tank. Probably paid more in time and blood than money on the tank.

You asked a question, you were given honest answers. Yes, some use overflows with no problems. Is the setup worth it? Maybe, maybe not, it depends. Take your responses and formulate your own opinion. I'm 100% certain nobody will come back at you with the hostility you responded with.

Heres what I have invested in my tank.... 55 gallon tank and cast iron stand...Free
    4 ft shop light ...$12
    seaclone skimmer...$95
    2 power heads from walmart...$40
    used heater..$5
    sand and rock...approx. $80
20 pounds of DIY rock $14
Diy overflow and sump....$20 including pump
thats pretty much it besides livestock and maintenance cost.Im saving up for a light now.
One person said the sump wasnt worth dragging home, another says its worth $200 I dont know what to believe.

well I have always respected Horkn before too, followed his thread closely for a while, but first he made me feel stupid for wanting to have an overflow, then he said that lots of people would laugh at me.Why Wouldnt I get hostile?I asked the monetary value of the sump in question not what everyones preferences were.

He said people would laugh at you because you think he bought a predrilled tank. He built his - out of wood - hence people will laugh at your thinking he bought something pre-drilled. So how did you follow his thread closely for a while clearly he never bought a pre-drilled tank? That's most of the thread dude.

You are saying you want to re-sell the sump. So why have any feelings at all about having an overflow, you're re-selling it anyhow. It's just business.

you have $112 wasted in ur setup as i can tell. the light, skimmer, and heater. what kind of heater is it that cost $5? a bad heater can cook a tank. the sea crap skimmer is just that. and with the light you cant grow/have corals. if you want the sump offer them $40, its a flee market!

At the time I didnt remember that Horkn had built the plywood tank.I love Horkns tank, its awesome.Tanks like his are what keep me working on mine to improve it all the time.Ive probably read 30-40 tank threads on various sites so I cant remember all of them,Im sorry that I didnt remember what kind of tank Horkn had.I would like to bulid a plywood tank but at $400 for just the tank thats clearly out of my price range compared to what I have in mine.granted Horkns tank is really nice, and mine's ghetto, but I spend what I can on it.I got into this hobby in May and lost my job in July so ive been lucky to do anything with it at all.I wasnt sure if I would keep the sump or not,I was exploring my options.I already have a rubbermaid type sump but thought I could either keep the other one or depending on value,I could sell it and have more money to put into my tank.
