I have a friend who is getting rid of all his aquarium stuff and I'm not sure if its really all that good of a deal for me. He wants to sell:

250 watt metal halide lights blue atinic
    Fena xp3 filter
    heater
    live rock
    crushed coral
75 gallon tank with stand and canopy

He wants $300 for all of it. I don't really need the tank, since I already have a 30G display, 90G display, and 55G fuge already. I could use some more live rock, but not like 100lbs more worth. Don't really need the crushed coral. And the filter isn't really even needed since we use a fuge. We could use it to place phosphate calcium media in.

Then again, my little brother probably would want the 75G if we saved it for him. And the extra supplies would help if we ever got a bigger tank. And I don't even know the value on the lights

Overall, is $300 for all this a steal? ok deal? or pass?
    Thanks

man what was your first reaction?

I would say that it is a fair deal without knowing the quality of each item.

It's only a steal if you feel it is. Another persons steal maybe your rip-off.

The answer depends upon the usefulness of the items to you. Buying 4 Ferrari rims for $1000 might be a steal, but if they only fit one car, you'd better have a Ferrari, unless you entered the deal looking to sell items on eBay.

The Rena XP3 is canister filter that sells new for about $129. I have no need for a canister filter on a reef tank but you might? As for the lights, I'd need a bit more description please. Is it a fixture, pendant, more than one bulb, etc? Actinics usually refer to supplemental lights in addition to the halide bulb. New halide bulbs alone can be had from $12 for an aquatrader model, up to $89 and beyond for Ushio or XMs. As for the tank, if you really wanted a 75 gallon tank you might luck out and find one by itself on Craigslist for $20 by a motivated seller.

    Get the idea?

As the poster above said, one man's treasure is another man's garbage. Are you asking for someone else's opinion on whether the new prices of all the items you list exceed $300? They probably do.

Personally I'd pass. I have no need for many of those items. You might.. .:-/

I'll have to check what exactly the lights contain. My brother was telling me that the lights are probably worth 300 alone. But I don't know all the specs for thm right now. I can use the tank, just not right away since I just got the 90G going. And I need more live rock in the 90G so it would be good to get some more with this new deal. Its going to cost me $100 for 30lbs of live rock at the LFS. I guess I'll ahve to just check and see what everything looks like.
