well if you already inching, might as well go 90g+ on your next upgrade.. I have 2 55gs, which i like the 4' length but the 12" width is getting old. limited on lighting and sump/fuges due to lack of space. I advise to get at least a 18" width tank.. more room for rocks, etc..

Oh how true. I have had a 12 inch wide 38g tank for over a decade. Can't stand it (no pun intended). I've recently purchased a 75g which is 18 inches wide. I really believe that an 18 inch wide tank (or wider) is needed for a saltwater setup.

12" width? I didn't think about this. What is the smallest capacity for a 48" x 18"? Is it a 75 gallon? I will definately need more than 12". I was really wanting to drill it. Are all 75 gallon tanks tempered? I do not want to use a siphon overflow at all.

I believe 75g is the smallest for a normal sized 48x18 footprint. Probably some oddball sized tank can be found (60g maybe?). The bottom is tempered but you don't want to drill the bottom with over 800 pounds of weight on the bottom plane of glass when the tank is full (obviously you would drill it empty but drilling would weaken the glass and that is a lot of weight). Sides are usually non-tempered glass.

I would drill the back, I have never liked the idea of a bottom drilled tank.

yea 75g is the smallest 48"x18" ive seen. you might be able to find a 75g or larger drilled used already.. just surf craigslist, local paper, and ebay.. it may take a month or two, but seems like alot of tanks are going for cheap lately due to the economy.
