Looking at buying a used reef octopus 110 nw skimmer from a local forum and wanted to know if its a good skimmer. it will be going in sump and its for a 72g tank that will be a reef tank 6-8months down the road. right now i have a hang on prizm skimmer that came with the tank and want to upgrade before i get it going.

It would probably be better than the prizm, but I would still recommend a larger skimmer for a 72.

Octopus is a great brand, and quite a bit better than coralife IMO. I just dont feel the NW110 would be a big enough skimmer for a 72 gallon tank

Well, here's the things for ratings with skimmers: they can be very misleading. That 110 gallon rating is for a tank with corals and no fish (VERY light stock). If your anything like me and the majority of us in the hobby, you're going to want as many fish as possible ;)
I would always go with at least double the rating. For Octopus, I would look at at least the NW150, or even an octopus extreme series. Now, the thing is, is you need to look at how much room you have in your sump. Octopus's have very large footprints compared to other skimmer's, so that is something that needs to be considered.
With all that being said, if that $100 dollar budget is set in steel, the 110 would be a good skimmer. But I would recommend waiting and saving. There are two things you really do not want to skimp with in this hobby, and that's lighting and skimmers ;)

I don't plan on having tooo many fish...just a yellow tang, 2 clowns, and a coral beauty....i did get a steal on some t5ho lights. got 4-54w lights fixture and 4 bulbs for 80 bucks.

ok will do...ill look out for a 150....the 100 budget is not set in steel but i do budget my money and would like to find one under 150 if possible. ill look around ebay for the 150gal. thanks

Ok think i have narrowed it down to 3, which one is better?

    E-Shopps SPK 100 - $120
    Octopus 110 - $120
    Coralife 125 -$100

i have no hands on expierence with the first too, but i did have a coralife 125
on 90 and it did a decent job it wasn't a sps quality clean but that had more to do with my stocking and maitence on my part. it didnt dissapoint for a used skimmer i got for 50 dollars, i would have still been happy with it if i paid a 100 for it
