It's not impossible for mantis to take down fish, don't think I ever said that? However, if they are kept well fed, they tend to not cause this problem. That being said, pretty much everything in the ocean is an opportunistic feeder so I'm not surprised that it does happen. :) Having kept one as a "pet", I'm a bit biased towards the beasts and would hate to see them hunted down and killed when there are so many folks who would be interested in paying good money for them. I have to say that sometimes killing them is the only option because of the fact that they are so intelligent but if it can be avoided, more power to ya :)

Perhaps it was a 'spearer' that got your fish and not a 'smasher'?

I would try to trap them. If they are small, you may get lucky. Then you could keep them in a smaller tank and decide what to do with them. Maybe you will fall in love with them and keep a species tank for them...;D

The Christmas tree worms...my understanding is that if the coral dies on the rock, they will die soon after. They live partially on the shedded films or mucouse from the corals.

Amcarrig, they also eat phyto? Cool....I am so learning everyday? Have you heard the same for these worms...with the corals?

They are so pretty....I hope they do well for ya!:)

I had the same thought but the poster also indicated that he lost shrimp, crabs and snails :)

I believe that most worms with the type of feeding apparatus that you see on X-mas tree worms need phyto to survive. Haven't heard about the mucous (yuk) thing but it seems to be a myth?
