It will only remove chlorine and dirt in the water, so no for fish.

You could make it into an RODI setup but for what it would cost after buying an RO membrane, canister for DI and DI resin, a sediment filter and a carbon block you would be right up there with buying a new RO unit that would also come with the auto shut off valve and possibly inline TDS meter(s)

    Gexx:

It's a canister filter. You can get sediment, carbon, and DI cartridges for it.

It's only a 2 stage, so it most likely was used just for sediment and carbon.

Would it work for fish only/ FOWLR? Yeah. It's a step in between treated tap water and RO/DI. If it's a fish only tank that would clean most of the really bad stuff out.

Would it work for a reef tank? Maybe... you're still better off with RO/DI but in a pinch it would be way better than straight tap water.

You can get good sediment filters just about anywhere that stocks them. For the carbon filter make sure you get a high quality one. Best if it's made for reef tanks as it won't spike phosphates like many cheaper carbon filters.

Always test the water when you make it tho.

A taste and odor filter such as that one is not a replacement for an RO or RO/DI. It does nothing for TDS so is not suitable for a reef systeme nor a fish only system if you care about your fish. It is designed to remove large particles, sediment, some metals and chlorine, not total dissolved solids.

Could it be adapted? Yes, but the cost would be similar to buying a brand new of the shelf guaranteed system with all the bells and whistles like TDs meters and gauges.

The Costco unit is designed for drinking water and again would need a different, lower micron prefilter, carbon(s), DI filter, TDS meter, Pressure gauge etc so is not a financially viable option. I actually started with a Watts Premier/Costco system years and years ago myself and can speak very accurately about them. I also live about 1 mile from their factory and have visited it several times over the years.

Stick with a system designed from the ground up to be a reef RO/DI and you will get better quality water and longer life out of it for around $150 total.

grey soul- why do you think it would be good for a fish only? thats all i would use it for. i would buy water for my reef tank if necessary.

AZDESERTRAT- could you please point me in the direction of a cheap but affective RO water dispenser. or RO/DI? thanks

Fish deserve just as good a water quality as corals in my mind, they are a higher life form to begin with.

The ProPlus found here is very hard to beat with all it comes with. At $149 it includes things that are normally only found on units starting at $200 or more like inline pressure gauges, dual inline TDS meters and full size 20 oz vertical refillable DI filters, plus some things not offered by most others like custom mixed reef specific DI resins, capillary tube flow restrictors and hand tested RO membranes.

Yes. depending on how you want to hook it up, permanent or portable like a garden hose or kitchen/laundry/bathroom sink you may want a sink adapter or valve. It comes with a garden hose thread adapter which fits a hose bib or garden hose and some laundry sink faucets. Other than that is its complete and ready to make water. Spectrpure has a nice quick connect sink adapter which snaps on and off very quickly on their website I believe.
