The $149 is a special price that may go away at any time. They say the items in the sale ad change periodically.
For comparison, the MaxCap is $249 in the ad, I paid $389 for it about 5 years ago when it was first introduced. The sale prices are a bargain.

Gexx: I said it would work for a fish only tank, I didn't really say it would be "good".

many people use treated tap water for their tanks. They add a chemical that removes chlorine compounds and that's it. A sediment + carbon filter would remove chlorine compunds and more.... but it could still let some stuff through - mostly ionic salts of various metals, like copper, that kill reefs.

For fish many people have found that most of what's in municipal water supplies isn't that bad to begin with, and any level of filteration is better than no filters - it's still not the ideal set up.

As for good Ro/DI units.... there's 2 things that matter: filter components and Service.

The plastic housings for filter cartridges and membranes are all pretty much the same. They all more or less use the same sediment filter and carbon block filter technology.

Most of the vendors do custom "reef specific" DI resin charges.

A few sell better membranes than others.

And some offer all that at a great price, with good shipping, service, and reputation - as well as help sponsor 3reef.

With that in mind I just picked up a 180gpd MaxCap DI, the pressure gauge came in busted, talked to Scott in their tech dept and they are taking care of it, so A++ on service. No doubt they're going to hear from me again when I need to replace filters/membranes.

BUT.... to get started, if you need water NOW, any filtration is better than none. Just remember that RO/DI is one of the first "upgrades" you're going to want to make.

I have the Water General on my 58 reef tank for ATO. It's a good unit, well made. no meters, and no special DI resins, just regular 2 part mixed bed resins. Channeling isn't an issue, they're packed pretty full, and mine darken evenly. I need to change them this week in fact...

Still, for the sale price, the Spectrapure's are worth EVERY penny. You could probably buy 3 and sell 2 when their sale ends and make some money.
