I've recently had a sever cyno problem that lasted about 4 months and I just could not get rid of the stuff. About a month ago I deceided to just get an RO unit and started doing water changes. The red slime seems to have gone away and I started noticing this purplish algae growing on the rocks. Im just not sure if its coralline. It doesnt blow off like redslime and is tough to get off the rocks. My tank is about 8 months old and the glass is covered with a neon green algae that is so difficult to scrape off. Do you think these algaes are coralline? thanks

The pic is dark but that looks kind of like coraline algae.

I second that one dark but does appear to be corraline it takes a while to get going but once it appears in your tank evrything will start getting covered with it in no time.

Coraline can come in a couple different colors. It very well can be but like Jim said it is kinda hard to tell from your pic. It is usually stuck to the rock and walls, doesn't move, and is very hard to get off.

    It is (was) coraline.

When you got that rock was it live? Did it already have coraline algae on it? If so, did you ever scrub it with RO or leave it out in the sun or simply dry it out?

I am asking because it has that thin spread out look like it was once live coraline that died.

That said, it could simply be forming like that - but it is coraline.

    ALW thanks for the reply

It started off as just white base rock. I bought a coral attaced to a small rock that was covered in coralline algae about 1 or 2 months ago and it has been sitting right ontop of this rock. I hoped it would seed it. It doesn't look the same as the coral that is covered with coralline algae so I wasnt sure if it was coralline on that rock.

You are on your way. Get a good Razor because soon it will be on everything including the glass.

It seems to start on the plastic pieces such as the water returns. You probably have it there already.

I thought using razor blades on the inside glass was a bad idea? I want to scrape the green i have off but nothing seems to work like a razor!
