Okay I am working on my first marine build. I am using a 75g display tank, and was planning on using a 40 gallon sump, but I woke up this morning with this crazy idea. If I run my overflow and return into my basement and use 3 plastic 20 gallon totes 1 for mechanical filtration one for a fuge and 1 for a return, attached is a picture. If I do this do I need to worry about what may be in the air in my basement? bugs, moisture, mold and such?

You probably don't want a bunch of random particles settling into your water... But I'm sure you can design for that and work out a clever cover/guard.

If you do do this, you are gonna need one heck of a return pump.... Could be pretty costly.

I wouldn't call it crazy at all,I'm sure many others have done this.As mentioned above you could need a very good return pump.On the other hand,if the temp in your basement is suitable this setup could go a long way to help maintain a good average water temp in warmer weather.

Do you have enough room for 3 40s?

That would be great if you can work out the logistics.

Yeah, I don't see a problem either as long as you can cover them and get a good return pump (that's quite a long way up to pump the water).

You're probably going to want to use an external pump for this one, but the idea is sound.
