The "stuff" is red right? Not brown? If it's slimey and red, it's most likely cyanobacteria (red slime). If it's slimey and brown, it's most likely dinoflagellates.

I have that exact same stuff. The dark red stuff, I was able to blow off easy. But the bright red was very hard to remove. The dark red grew all over everything for a month or so, but then slowly disapered over the next couple months and is now very limited.

It is amost like algae. The purple corraline is exploding in my tank. Its about 2.5 month old and looking healthy. The red is very pretty on the rocks. It is very red not brown. What about all those red stringy strands thad grow? They grow as thich as your beard is on your face in 1 spot.

If it's red and comes off the rock easily and looks/feels slimey, then it's probably cyanobacteria. It seems like you've got a bit of hair algae growing on the rock? If that's the case, the hairy stuff that you're seeing is probably just hair algae covered in cyano.

I found a spot that was about 2 inches around. I rubbed it with my finger and it came right off but really did not feel slimey. The bright red spots that are like blood spots dont come off the rock. The hairy stuff pulls off easily and looks like a bundle of red public hairs for lack of a better way to describe it. Should I be worried about this stuff. Willit go away. I will be looking for other threads on it. Post the threads if you have them handy please.

    Thanks people. [smiley=help.gif]
