I would stay away from pure actinic. One super actinic bulb would be plenty. 2 or 3 of 454's and and 2 or 3 of daylight depending on how blue you want the tank to look.

I was thinking along the same lines. I don't know the PAR values on t12 bulbs. My concern is that he has 4 VHO, but they are all blue or actinic. They also sound like UVL actinic. I know UVL T5 Super Actinics have fairly low PAR values, as does the 454. The daylights only be NO, PAR values may be questionable, but without a light meter, you can't really know for sure. If I were you, I would start out with some easy sps such as montipora digitata and see how they do. If they brown out, then you know your lighting isn't up to par, no pun intended. If they do fine and maintain color, then you can add a clam or acropora or other more light demanding coral.

I was thinking about getting some different bulbs so they aren't all actinic, maybe when my tank matures some more and I add some stuff. I wanted MH and and t5 fixture but heat was an issue becausey canopy is so shallow and he told me these would do the job just as good.

so would having all 6 bulbs vho help or is more of changing some actinics out for 10k bulbs

MH will always win over T5 in depth. I haven't have heat issues with my MH

    Here is an excerpt:
*T-12; a standard pin, 1-1/2” wide bulb. This bulb will generally use more watts and have a lower lumens per watt ratio (usually around 40) and is common in shop lights and even many aquarium bulbs. These are generally the least expensive lamps to purchase and even though they may be “old school”, these still may make up for there low technology with the fact you can purchase several for a low price to make up for poor efficiency. The main caution I would add to these of these bulbs for aquariums is many forums often suggest the use of shop lights as an inexpensive alternative to many aquarium lights, however a 4100 K cool white shop light is not going to come close to a 6400 K daylight lamp that is of peak PAR efficiency (even if you match.......

T5HO are good to 30" in depth with the proper placement of corals. So a 400W MH is good to around 36" I believe. That is a lot of heat with a 400W MH.

All six VHO and one actinic at most. 3 454 and 3 10000K or some combo of those two would be best.
