Is this normal?

    If you have spots of algae, it may mean that you need more flow in the area. maybe add a powerhead or move the ones you have to try to increase flow to area.

    Invest some $$$ in decent (ferrum oxide - based) antiphosphate medium, like RowaPhos! The younger the tank the higher the chance you will get small algae blooms!

    It's pretty much gone now. I caught a bunch of hermit crabs at a flat in the intercoastal (I know how this sounds;D) and they ate almost all of it. The snails are taking care of the algae on the overflow box, just really slowly lol.

    A lot of times algae won't go away on it's own, you need to stay on top of it.
    perhaps siphoning the sand the very top layer or maybe deeper depending on the severity of the algae, you can do this when you do your wc's and also using a magnet to get it off the glass or a scrub pad!
