I am planning a 210 with fish, live rock and some coral. Need to know if a 55g sump/refugium i.e. 1 tank with 3 chambers: skimmer, substrate, and internal return pump area is adequate. Exact dimensions are 48 x 17 x 16 (lwh).

a 55 gallon would be really adequate. my garbage can refuge is more than enough for my 55!

If you want the fuge to work properly then you need to slow the flow down to that section and let the sump pass water quickly by the skimmer. Good rule of thumb is 1/10 size of display and 1/10 gph across it.

a garbage can refugium?!? I would love to see that!!!!

khpddog, what are the dimensions of your fuge? Does it occupy more than half of the sump? About half? Melev on Melevsreef.com recommends that
the refugium of an aquarium should be at least 10% of the main display's volume.
