My local home depot is selling play sand for $2.50 for a 50lb bag. Anyways, the name brand is Sakrate Natural Play Sand (fine sand).....is this the type of sand i can use in my aquarium? I also attached a pic of the sand.

I dont know have you tried to check their web site for a product data sheet.
you will need to check for things such as Phosphates and heavy metals

This is silica sand. There is debate over whether or not silica sand is detrimental to a reef tank. At the very least, silica is diatom fuel. Many people use silica sand, however.

Here's a good article from a professional in the field. Reading such articles thoroughly will help you make an informed decision along with the advice you receive from 3reef.

For one thing that play sand is brown, and the silicates are thought to fuel algae blooms. I have 100 pounds of that stuff in my garage I never used as I did my homework after I rinsed the hell out of it for hours. I was on the fence about using it, then i got an awesome deal on some live sand I couldn't pass up.

Any play sand labeled "tropical" or "down south" if I remember correctly is aragonite based and much better to use.

Yeah, for the expense of this hobby and the years one could take collecting the nicest pieces, I wouldn't pinch pennies on something so vital. Doesn't sound right to me.
