People I talk to about setting up a SW system keep saying the same thing. Like I'm just creating work for myself for no reason.
Hehe, I'm sure a lot of you get the same thing here and there.

" I hear those (SW tanks) are a lot of work."

Neighbor: (while I'm cleaning rocks preparing my new stand)

"You're glutt'n for punishment... why not just get a cat?"

or there's the classics "Where ya gonna fit that thing?"

"Doesn't it cost a lot to maintain it?"

I kinda just tell them .. it's something you have to want to do.

I guess either you understand or you don't.

My favorite... well it would have to be: "Why fish? You can't even pet them!" Sure you can as long as its not a lionfish or foxface!

I have a friend who does not understand why I spend all this money on my tanks....she is into scuba and says for all the money that goes into the tank, I could take some amazing trips and see these fish in their natural habitat!

I just tell her that I get to see the fish 24/7...that it relaxes me to watch!

Out of fear of being committed....I have limited who gets to come to my house....as my obsessions have gotten out of control! ;D I have too many species tanks right now to seem normal to the average person...then add my dogs and I go right to the front of the line of crazy people to some! Fish people understand....non-fish people think I am off my rocker!!!

i think a saltwater fish tank is just about as much work as a dog if you add up the walks, feeding, playing, training, vet trips and bills
I've always had a dog all my life, the good thing about dogs is you never have to pick up any food you drop

in response i would say cats pee on stuff, claw up stuff, they have hair balls(contrary to the name its vomit), plus im allergic.

Yeah I grew up in Hawaii and I love free diving and scuba diving. I live in Oregon now and its just a way for me to take a piece of the reef into my home. Just being able to look at it forever makes me happy! Plus all my friends are love it. :D

Or the looks you get depending on where you buy your feeders. In the past..when I did not have time to go and buy mollies from my normal LFS, I would stop in at Petsmart and buy 1 or 2 there for the day. There was a young girl there that would say "which one do you want to take home for your pet" Now mind you I am 35!!
I would tell her it did not matter, just pick a couple...oh no, you need to pick since they are going in your tank. When I told her they were feeders...she just looked at me and I thought she was going to cry, and then I thought she was not going to give them to me! She just handed me the bag like I was the cruelest person.

My mother had an angler and went there all the time for her fish and I told her about the story so she never told them they were for feeders. This girl kept telling her "now remember we have a 14 day policy if anything happens make sure you bring it back and we will replace it for you" She must have thought that my mom had a 125g tank of just mollies! I told mom she ought to bring in her angler and say "I need to replace my mollies...um he ate them" or wait till he pooped them out!
