Have had this SPS coral for about 8 months. Seems to be doing well, However i notice something at the end of it, looks like a white growth, it appears to growing or coral looks to be covered in something. Does anyone know what it is or have any experience with it?

    Thanks.

Possibly new growth. Hard to tell from the pic. Just growing faster than the flesh can keep up? Normal for some sps.

Might be burnt tips from alk swings, low alk, or high alk.

    Thanks both for the ideas.

Not sure if this is the cause, the coral has been growing and never shown any sign of this before. But it could be.

Good idea, and it may be the case, however i have been dosing the same way every night ever since i have had the coral. Have not missed a bunch of days or added a whole bunch of Alk.

I am responding to help find the problem, if it is a problem.

I just don't want to loose the coral or have a mass die off. Trying anything to help it.

Thanks for the ideas, anyone else?

burnt tip could be from when you top off, the freshwater doesnt mix enough before getting to your DT.

Do you test alk then dose accordingly, or are you following a regimen on the bottle. For a few year I dosed as I saw fit... ad that didn't work well with stony corals.

It could be, i haven't changed anything in my ATO for over a year and it was never issue before.

Yes, I tested my ALK and then dosed accordingly to determine what my ALK usage was.

Not sure what my numbers are right now, I do not test regulatory. Normally follow my dosing retinue, then check to make sure i am still in my desired range, which I have been.

Could it be a disease? or could it be a sting from another coral? I have a large galaxy coral close to the SPS, that may have stung it, but in 8 months it has never been stung before. Could that be it?

i think it looks like something is stinging it. What do you have around it? I also agree it could be a burnt tip but i would look at the coral around it and see what could be sending out its sweepers at night

Ok that makes sense. You galaxy and your hydno there have been growing closer and close. Sounds like the proximity sensor on your galaxy just went off and sweepers were set-to-kill.
