Not sure what to do. It all started a few weeks ago with the introduction of a powder blue tang.. Ended up with ich. Treated with herbtana. No skimmer for 10 days. Looked like a typical algae outbreak and I attributed it to no skimming. Figured with water changes and skimming it'd go away. Seems super aggressive. I clean it off and it's back right away. Going to try going dark for 4 days hopefully to starve it out. Anyone have experience with it and how was it resolved?

yes,i did the same(blackout) with no water changes and reduced flow by turning off a couple powerheads (flow feeds dinos).I also raised my ph to 8.4 during this time and did manual removal with a syphon vac.I did this under the guidence of Inwall75's help, and it worked like a charm.

We're finally beating it. Cut the light cycle from 8 to 4 hours, sucked it out with a turkey baster as much as possible, and skipped one of our water changes once we figured out that seemed to be fueling it. We no longer have anything to suck out, but we're still seeing some bubbles form on the rocks closest to the lights in the last hour of our lighting period. Once we see that start to go away, we'll start adding time back to the light cycle.

Our pH was always right at 8.0, our mag was always low, but since we started dosing 2-part the pH has been a little high (8.4 to 8.6)...haven't got the dosing quite balanced yet.

Took a while, but everything does in this hobby.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm trying to keep calm. I'm turning off my halides for a few days and I've turned off my powerheads. All I have for water movement if my return of about 1200gph. A few questions though

Would I be able to turn my lights on at all? I have corals and I'm concerned about no lighting for 4 days. Can actinics be on at all?

    What about feeding?

What about my livestock? Inverts and inverts etc. Is this a death sentence for them?

Thanks for your help and advice

You're fine going complete blackout. Your corals will be fine. Remember, photosynthesis only makes up a portion of a corals Daily Carbon Budget.

No, it's not a death sentence for your livestock. We didn't do lights out for 4 days, but they're still only running 4 hours a day and they're all fine. Corals are fine too, but we only have softies. We didn't stop feeding, couldn't or one of our fish would have died. Never heard that flow contributes, so we didn't turn off the powerheads, either.

I'm going to posts few pics to confirm my diagnosis.. I've dealt with cyano in the past and it doesn't worry me. Most of the threads I've read seem to suggest that Dino is very often mistaken for cyano. What I have is very stringy and if I take it off something, it seems to come back very fast..

    Thanks for all your help. To recap;

I will keep lights off for about 4 days

    I have reduced flow

    I won't do a water change for a while

I will manually remove what I can

Should this take care of it? Any other advice?

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
And bump up the mag to around 1500, it may help and it will not hurt.

    How I proceeded.

Complete black out for 4 days. Corals did fine.
Manual removal from rocks and corals daily.
    No water changes.
    Elevated and maintained pH.
Reduction in photoperiod after black out.

If is dino, if you clean of rock work and glass and it reappears quickly, slimmy, stringy and have air bubbles attached or within, does not respond to reductions or export of nitrates or phosphates.

    Good luck
