I did this DIY and it turned out ok..but it just was not what I had planned..even though I planned a bunch...maybe over planned...for sure over engineered...should have taken some advice..from more than one person...many regrets...but all that aside..it was an adventure and a real cool project that taught me a great deal...
This is a picture of my DIY sump..its pretty amazing, actually...except that when I had my "overflow incident" it stressed the seams and it began to leak..very slightly but any is too much. the partitions were to thin..advice was to use 1/4 inch..I did not do that..my bad..they bowed..then breached. This is a picture of me pumping it out (as I do a WC)

So, Here is what I came up with...I found this 75 gallon tank that was the perfect length and width...
    Height was a different story...remedy..

    Clean up the edges..

    Installed partitions (1/4 inch)

    Fits perfect..now, Taller..Longer..and wider...

Everything back in order...All is well in the "Fuge" : )
This photo is a nice example of the step down, 3 stage, gravity fuge /sump/ return. Very Basic.

I'm working on my RO/DI system now...booster pump...check valves..pressure gauges..spectrapure upgrade..etc..I know we all LOVE pictures..So hope ya enjoy! ..see ya later folks.8)

Wow...I love it. I wish I were handy like this. It would make the hobby much less expensive. Great work. You know what would be really nice? A little bit more detail. How did you do the partitions?

Just had them cut to size...used a square to get'm straight....one at a time, just a drop to hold them in place, then I run the sealant ...also, put pieces of 1/2 X 1/2 plastic pices on the pressure side (everthing goes towards the return) so the 1/2 X 1/2 braces are on that side...it helps. Obviously the fuge partition is the tallest, then the partition between the sump and the return is an inch or so lower..if you look at the first partition in the fuge youll see the 2 inch space in the middle..this forces the water to flow "through" the live rock and cheato...or "whatever" you got in there....Not much else to say ...use no smaller than 1/4 inch for your partitions...and if you build your own box....LISTEN to people who know. lol : )
...and btw...lessexpensive?...not this deal...now I got a 300 dollor box I'm going to turn into a trick looking PLANTER for my wife..i'll be sure and post pix! lol
