    That looks like coraline dieoff to me. If this is reasonably new <1year rock, I wouldn't worry too much unless it doesn't start to fill in.

    You can see in the picture that some of this "shiny white stuff" is in the form of bulbs or balls. Coraline very frequently grows in that same pattern or shape..... Its gotta be dead coraline...
