Bacterial blooms(depending on the type) cause low oxygen levels and can cause ammonia spikes. You are gonna probably need more then the 50 or so gph(more like 30 when it slimes up) that tiny pump provides but as you say its hard to tell from just a picture.A small koralia would work temporarily or always so you could use the spraybar to agitate the surface more which is very important for your tank right now.

i may be able to get better pics, but the pump circulates quite well actually. i think the main factor here is the splash guard. i have no removed it to give the water more open surface area for gas exchange.

Is there any room for carbon in the back? It's so small you could easily soft cycle the tank.

Soft cycle you do water changes to keep the ammonia level in check so it does not kill off the sponges, algae and inverts. It's often used for uncured live rock. It's the only way I cycle a tank now, but the method is not for everyone and really only works best if you have some nice live rock.

would i be able to do this with my tank? do i have to do water changes more often than i would on average? is my live rock good enough to do that?

Sure. You'll probably see spike by tomorrow judging by the bacteria going on. Test ammonia and change out 2 gallons wait 30 min and test again, keep the NH3 below 1.5. If you go above change out another gallon. Soon the seeded rock will be able to complete the cycle efficiently. You continue the process again once you add livestock for a couple days.

I know some people believe that a significant ammonia spike is the way to cycle a tank.

Look for member Brandon around on the forums, he is here rarely, sometimes RC and usually NR. He is the master of soft cycle.
