Just got another 20lbs of LR from a LFS in Orlando, FL ($7.99/lb a bit pricey). But look at how much stuff there is growing on it. The last time I got some LR it was at the time "good" but this store has LR with SPS, bi-valves, plants (if you want them), and a ton of coralline growth. Now the question is how much will survive in my tank.

    Also,
What will take care of my algae problem. It's currently only a LR tank (fish to come next month after the LR settles). The LR that has been in the tank for about 2 months has a lot of algae growing on it. There are two types that I have seen. One is the green hair like algae that is in little tufts on the LR and the other is a dark brown color that has spread across all the non shaded areas. The last picture is of the two algae problems.

Any help with the latter problem would be great and also what does everybody think about the new LR I just got. Is it sub-par, par, above par, etc...

    Thanks for your feedback

    Nice looking rock.

Most of the LR coming out of FL is aquacultured and if got to you fresh, most of that life should survive initial small cycle.

Get yourself some hermit crabs and that brown stuff (probably diatoms) will disapper quick.

Yea, that live rock looks really good. I bought that same Florida aquacultured LR from the LFS in Vegas for $11 /lb if it makes you feel any better. Fiji, Marshall Island, Tonga, and even Vanuatu doesn't compare. Mine looked just like yours when I put it in my tank. I have all kinds of cool growth happening from the LR. I looks awesome, and was worth every dollar..

Nice pick up! Florida/Caribbean rock costs about $12.99lb. here in Connecticut! Go figure...it is cheaper to buy Tonga and Fiji rock and it is farther away?
Most of the live rock you picked up should live, especially the shorter period of time you have had the live rock out of water(transporting from pet shop to your tank.

You could of save a bunch of $ and got some base rock to use in your tank. It will all become alive after a while but so many people are in a hurry these days. I would rather start out with clean rock so I know what is in my tank and not have algae problems.
Hope things work out for you, next time buy base rock and get some coral with all the money you save. :-/
