Just let it be. I prefer my refugiums ugly and full of algae. It means that it's doing its job.

think of it like the sump/fuge is the one who's taking it for the team it should get pretty ugly and the uglier the better.

I don't want to come across as disagreeing with the previous posts because I do agree with them. But I would add a couple of things. If you are seeing excessive algae in your dt then you still can improve upon nutrient levels in your system. Sucking the cyano out of the fuge wouldn't hurt anything. It does release toxins into the water so it may be useful to get that put of there I pull mine once it gets to be a nice thick mat of the stuff. I wouldn't get overly aggressive about it though the fuge should get ugly. It's there to keep that from happening in the DT

I Have all kinds of bad algae plus deitrus(pods love it) in my fuge but thats where it stays, sucking the nutients out of the dt. I say let it be unless you start getting it in your dt,then you know the nutients are higher than the fuge can handle and have to step in and correct the problem.

If you use caulerpa you should groom it often. Once it reaches a certain length it will not remove as much nutrients because it will not be growing as quickly.
