I'm a couple days away form setting up my first reef/saltwater tank. I'm going to use a 40 breeder as well. At first i wasn't going to use a sump becuase i didn't want to deal with an over flow system. After i saw this post I'm thinking about changing my mind. I looked up the CPR CS50 and it looks like it will be easy to deal with. Do you think you could explain though how the aqualifter pump works? On the CPR website i saw a demonstration of the over flow but i didn't understand exactly how the pump works. Do you only use it to start the siphoning process then disconnect it? How do you prevent the sump from overflowing if the power goes out as well? I'm worried about using a hang on back overflow becuase i don't want to get water everywhere if the power goes out.

Also, do you think you could post some pictures of your sump?

You'll love having a sump after you get it set up. I honestly don't see how people run tanks over 10 gallons without one. The overflow is very easy to deal with. The Aqualifter pump just keeps air out of the overflow box, or keeps it primed. I keep mine on all the time. That way if the power does go out and I'm not home, it will start back up flawlessly.

I keep my sump from overflowing by not putting the return pipes very far into the water. I keep them about 2 mm under the water. That way only 2 mm of water can be siphoned back into the sump when the return pump cuts off before it starts trying to pull air.

Unfortunately I'm at the library and don't have any pics of my sump with me. I will post some on here tomorrow some time. If I haven't by tomorrow night just remind me!

New yellow wrasse! Got him yesterday. I can't believe he's out and about already. He and the melanurus are both in the Halichoeres genus, so I was kind of worried that they wouldn't get along. There was some chasing at first but things have settled down and I think they will be fine. Adds tons of color to the tank!

I seriously try ALL the time. It never works out. I just get a blue blur. He's awesome though. Starting to really mature and get good coloration.

That Canarry is a great addition, I love mine. There's something about that bright yellow.
